The Louvre Makes a Major Fashion Statement

With the men’s collections in full swing and Couture right around the corner, the Louvre Museum today will unveil “Louvre Couture,” the first major exhibition to place masterworks of modern fashion—and their inspiration—within the broader context of French history and decorative arts.

 

Keeping company with tapestries, armor, jewels, enamel, goldsmithing, bronzes, cabinetry, porcelains and other ornamentations that embody the glory of French craftsmanship are looks by 45 houses and designers, among them Balenciaga by both Cristobal and Demna, Hubert de Givenchy, Christian Dior by John Galliano and Maria Grazia Chiuri, Schiaparelli by Daniel Roseberry, Nicolas Ghesquière for Louis Vuitton, and pieces from final collections—by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel and by Gianni Versace—as well as leading indies like Marine Serre, Erdem, Undercover, Thom Browne and Iris van Herpen.

      Elie Hirsch

      Elie Hirsch is a French sculptor and metal artist based in Sormery, Burgundy. He specializes in unique pieces at the intersection of sculpture and jewelry, using traditional metalworking techniques. Working primarily with brass and copper, Hirsch shapes, hammers, welds, and patinates sheet metal to produce forms that range from small-scale wearable objects to large sculptural installations.

      His practice combines fine metal craftsmanship with a sculptural approach to form. Each work is unique and produced in limited series. He began his training in ceramic design and Metal Sculpture before completing a two-year apprenticeship with French sculptor Hervé Wahlen, where he focused on large-format metalwork. In 2007, he won the "Young creators of the Ateliers d'Art de France" award, celebrating remarkable craftsmanship in young French talents. He has since established an independent studio practice where he all of his creations are handmade.

      Hirsch’s work has been exhibited internationally. His pieces are included in private collections and have been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Paris, New York, Seoul, Antwerp, Rome, and Florence. In recent years, he collaborated with high fashion brands Loewe, Balmain and Schiaparelli on wearable metal creations.
