Overview
Born in Brussels in 1958 into a family of artists, Nicolas Alquin is a sculptor. He studied art restoration in Paris before training under Reinhoud d’Haese and Étienne-Martin. His son, Marc Alechinsky, born in 1989, is an architect and designer whose work explores the relationship between objects and their surroundings. Together, they bring their respective disciplines into a creative dialogue between sculpture, architecture, and contemporary design.
Nicolas Alquin works primarily with carved wood, beeswax, and bronze, drawing inspiration from Judeo-Christian iconography and traditional sculptural practices. Marc Alechinsky brings an architectural perspective, exploring the relationship between form and space. Their complementary approaches unite craftsmanship and design, allowing each discipline to enrich the other.
Their collaborative practice is guided by the physical character and spiritual resonance of a place. Attentive to materials, proportions, and spatial relationships, they create works that engage with their surroundings, combining sculptural expression, architectural vision, and a sensitivity to the experience of space.
Among their notable projects is the liturgical furniture for the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Sceaux, France, completed in 2022. In 2023, the duo was among five finalists invited to propose new liturgical furnishings for Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, reflecting their approach to integrating contemporary art within historic architecture.
