Emmanuel Jonckers

Belgian designer Emmanuel Jonckers was born into a family of art furniture makers, spending time from a young age in his parents’ atelier where he was introduced to the artistic processes of metalwork and engraving. After a creative childhood, he went on to study art and was drawn to the world of interior decor and design, exploring a wide array of technical crafts, including welding and engraving on glass, resin and wood, as well as jewelry and watchmaking. Equipped with a lifelong experience and know-how of his trade, Jonckers creates complex, detailed furniture works made of shapely polished metal and covered in fine engravings. Working mainly in brass and maillechort, Jonckers designs unique pieces made of large, organic shapes engraved with abstract linework, sometimes flowing, other times geometric. His handcrafted works often involve layering forms and textures, blending a sensual touch with futuristic design elements. Influenced by his passion for a panoply of topics including alchemy, ancient scriptures, hieroglyphs, Kabbalistic symbolism, and geology, Jonckers’ work celebrates the inherent durability and beauty of the lasting materials he works with, as well as the traditions of craftsmanship passed down through his family and cultural lineage. Viewing his engraved surfaces as “structured anarchy of the elements, like open doors on organic and mineral,” Jonckers’ approach is as intuitive as it is philosophical, with a keen sense of the natural properties of his materials. With an eye to the universal and cosmic, his work harmonizes with its environment, fitting well with interiors of any style due to its synthesis of modern and ancient design. Headquartered in his Brussels studio, Jonckers creates his exclusive handmade pieces for clients around the world and for galleries in Paris, Beirut and New York, where he is represented by Twenty First Gallery. He also enjoys collaborating on custom artwork with buyers who approach him with new concepts and challenges.
